The new Sgt. Windflower Holiday Mystery is here

Christmas in Newfoundland — Memories and Mysteries Book 2: A Sgt. Windflower Holiday Mystery is now available on Amazon and will soon be available at bookstores everywhere. Book Launch announcement very soon. Stay tuned.

From the author of the Award-winning Sgt. Windflower Mysteries including Christmas in Newfoundland: Memories and Mysteries Book 1, comes another welcome addition to the Sgt. Windflower family of books.

Come sit by the fire of the woodstove in the kitchen and listen to stories of Christmas long ago in Grand Bank and Ramea and tales of great adventure and Christmas magic in St. John’s in the 1960s and onward. Have Christmas dinner with Sgt. Windflower and Sheila and their two little girls. Then wait and see if any special visitors show up to entertain them.

Sing along with the choir or have a drink with old friends to celebrate Tibb’s Eve. Follow along as Eddie Tizzard has a special mission in the middle of a snowstorm and Herb Stoodley becomes an unlikely Christmas hero.

Christmas in Newfoundland is always a time for good food, good friends, and good cheer. And there’s always another chair at the table.

What readers are saying about Christmas in Newfoundland: Memories and Mysteries:

For someone whose family hails from Newfoundland and have lived on The Rock for generations upon generations, this novel was so beautifully nostalgic that I found myself smiling throughout the entire time I was reading it. The work is wonderful, warm, and charming as we walk with the author down memory lane to simpler times in one of the most beautiful provinces in Canada. This is just one big warm hug that will bring back fond memories to every reader, regardless of where they hail from.”

“Christmas in Newfoundland can be read quickly or slowly but I highly recommend reading it and getting lost in the Christmas spirit. Mike Martin will have you reminiscing about some of your old family traditions and may even give you ideas of new things to try in your Christmas.”

Christmas in July??? Well, August

Christmas may be still a ways off, but we’re happy to announce that Christmas in Newfoundland 2: Memories and Mysteries will be coming in October, 2022. This new collection will feature all new stories from growing up in St. John’s all the ay around the island of Newfoundland.

Christmas in Newfoundland 2: Memories and Mysteries continues the stories of the magic of Christmas past and present. There are memories of a wide-eyed child in St. John’s in the 1960’s with sledding and skating and road hockey every day of a very long winter. There are also acts of kindness by almost complete strangers and a chance to share some of the joys of music in this magical season.

There are plenty of stories of mystery and intrigue and suspense from Windflower and the gang and we get to see Christmas through the eyes of his two little girls, Amelia Louise and Stella. As well as some special memories from Eddie Tizzard and his family. Even one from Herb Stoodley, Windflower’s best friend, who finds himself an unlikely Christmas hero on one snowy Christmas.

Come back to Christmas in St. John’s, Grand Bank and a special trip to Ramea, a long, long time ago. When some people hung their Christmas tree from the ceilings in their kitchen and mummers were a regular tradition. You might even learn a little about a special Newfoundland Christmas event, Tibb’s Eve, which always was an occasion for another celebration of Christmas. If you haven’t got the spirt of Christmas yet, this book will help get you started.

Stay tuned for more information, contests, giveaways and more.

We have our First Review of Dangerous Waters to share as well. A Five Star review on Goodreads.

“Another enjoyable read by Mike Martin with one of my favorite characters, Sgt. Winston Windflower. He is a kind, caring, exceptional person who puts others before himself and works tirelessly to solve another case for the RCMP.

The author has created a series that is warm and comforting with memorable characters who support Windflower. I feel as if I know Windflower well and am at home each time I read a new book in the series.

The place the stories are based in Grand Bank, Newfoundland is a harsh, cold and snowy area but at the same time depicted as a family-oriented place to live and bring up one’s children. It’s a place where the people are supportive and always lend a hand for those in need.

I enjoy not only the story line of each book but also the recipes that the author shares of the local fish and seafood. It all sounds wonderful to live in a place where you can get your meal fresh from the ocean.

I look forward to more books in this series and highly recommend this book and others by Mike Martin”

Annual Windflower Holiday Book Event

dav

It’s time for the 9th Annual Windflower Holiday Book Event. For the last eight years I have been donating most of the profits from December book sales of Sgt. Windflower Mysteries to a worthy community cause. It’s a great way for me to give back a little to people and organizations who need so much, especially this time of year.

In the last eight years we have been able to donate over $5,000.00 to community groups who really need our support. We will be doing things a little different this year, so check out the information below as to how you can participate and help this great cause.

This year our chosen organization will again be the Minwaashin Lodge in Ottawa. Minwaashin Lodge is a healing centre in Ottawa that provides a range of programs and services to First Nations, Inuit and Metis women and children who are survivors of domestic and other forms of violence, and who may also be suffering the effects of the residential school system.

The mission of Minwaashin Lodge is to provide wholistic programs and services for grandmothers, women, children and youth impacted by family violence and residential schooling. All programs and services are provided in the context of cultural beliefs and values as part of the healing journey.

Here’s how you can participate.

Make a Donation

I am making an upfront donation of $500.00 to Minwaashin Lodge. I know that this money will go to support First Nations, Inuit and Metis women and children to have a good meal and presents from Santa under the tree on Christmas morning. If you want to make a donation please visit http://www.minlodge.com

Canadian donors can receive a tax receipt for their contribution.

Make a Donation and Get a Free Book

If you make a donation, I will send you or a person of your choice a signed copy of Christmas in Newfoundland: Memories and Mysteries, absolutely free of charge. Simply send me an email or FB message or comment below with the details of where you would like the book to go. And I will pop it in the mail. It’s that simple.

Thank you for supporting the Annual Windflower Holiday Book Event and Minwaashin Lodge

Buy a Book

Of course, you can support Sgt. Windflower Mysteries by buying a book. This year the latest releases are Buried Secrets and Safe Harbour. They are available in local bookstores in Ottawa like Perfect Books and Books on Beechwood and worldwide through Amazon.

Why I’m Giving Books Away:  The Sgt. Windflower Reading Equality Program

I have now published twelve books in the Sgt. Windflower Mystery Series (plus Christmas in Newfoundland: Memories and Mysteries) and each time I have chosen to give away a number of copies, absolutely free. Not only that, but I actively seek out strangers or near strangers on social media to give them away to. Now, I am not giving away all copies of my books. I am neither rich nor daft and I am not particularly altruistic, but I do believe in helping people to read my book.

And quite honestly not everyone can afford to buy a book, especially new books. Tons of people are living on a tight budget, on social assistance or on a fixed income because of disability or not being able to work anymore. It’s hard to comprehend in this world of plenty, but twenty bucks is a lot of money if you haven’t got it and one of the ‘luxuries’ that many people give up is purchasing new books. They wait until they are available from the library or get them from friends or from the second-hand bookstore. I support libraries, but why do some people have to wait?

I realize that I can’t give anybody a raise in their monthly stipend to help them with their book budget, but I can help at least a few of them enjoy my new books, fresh out of the printer’s box. I believe in an idea called Reading Equality, a radically new concept that everyone should have access to quality, new release books. That’s why I am making 25 copies of Dangerous Waters available to people on a low or fixed income. I am advertising this offer on Facebook and Twitter and as the time of writing there are still a few copies left.

If you want one or know of someone who could use one but can’t afford it, just message me with the mailing address and I will send a copy in the mail. And yes, I will even sign them. No questions asked. You can send me a message thru Sgt. Windflower Mysteries or Facebook.

Of course, if you have the money, I hope you will consider buying a copy for yourself. Maybe even one for somebody you know doesn’t have the cash. Pay it forward. It works for me.

And if you want to help get this book into even more hands, ask your local library to order a copy. They’re looking for your suggestions. And if they don’t have the budget, tell them to contact me and we’ll make them an offer they can’t refuse.

Early Praise for Buried Secrets

“It feels like coming home to read about Winston, his wife and children, the cozy dinners, delicious recipes of fish and meats, friendships, and the beautiful community of Grand Bank. Mike Martin has created a likable character in Winston. He is a kind, caring and dedicated member of the RCMP. The men under his command respect and look up to him for counsel. An enjoyable read that I hope will continue with the next chapter of Sgt.Winston Windflower”

“I have enjoyed each book in this series and Book 11 was no exception. The plot was topical (Covid, governmental shenanigans, girls trying to get out of the sex trade, office politics, religious interference in one of the murder investigations) and well-handled. There’s a good balance of investigation and home life. I appreciate that real world topics are sensitively addressed. The stories hold my interest, but don’t give me agita.

I am always sad when I finish a Windflower book, because it’s like leaving an old friend. I’m more anxious with this book 11 because I really want to know which path Windflower chooses and what happens in his life. I hope there are more in this series”

New Sgt. Windflower Mystery is on the Way.

New Sgt. Windflower Mystery is on the Way.

Buried Secrets to be released on October 15

Now available for pre-order from Ottawa Press and Publishing

https://www.ottawapressandpublishing.com/

Here’s a teaser:

RCMP Sergeant Winston Windflower is at a crossroads as career opportunities intrude on his near-perfect life in the blustery paradise of Grand Bank, Newfoundland. Just as the pandemic ends, the little oceanside communities are rocked by the murders of prominent figures, an RCMP Staff Sergeant in St. John’s and a minister in Grand Bank, and it’s implied that there are national security implications to at least one crime. There’s also a sinister new character hanging around doing the parish’s dirty work. Windflower finds himself a primary investigator, balancing work, potential major changes, and life with a young family while seeking guidance from his ancestral teachings and dreams.

Are the crimes connected, and can Windflower and his team find the killer before they strike again? Even as the police work becomes more complicated and even dangerous, Sgt. Windflower finds time to enjoy his family, his friends and always some great food. Come back to Grand Bank for another great adventure in Sgt. Windflower Mysteries.
