Annual Holiday Event: Make a Donation. Get The Christmas Beaver Free

It’s time for the 10th Annual Windflower Holiday Book Event. For the last nine years I have been donating most of the profits from December book sales of Sgt. Windflower Mysteries to a worthy community cause. It’s a great way for me to give back a little to people and organizations who need so much, especially this time of year.

In the last nine years we have been able to donate over $6,000.00 to community groups who really need our support. We will be doing things a little different this year. You don’t have to buy any books to participate. In fact, we’ll give you a free book if you donate to our chosen cause which again this year is the Minwaashin Lodge in Ottawa. Minwaashin Lodge is a healing centre in Ottawa that provides a range of programs and services to First Nations, Inuit and Metis women and children who are survivors of domestic and other forms of violence, and who may also be suffering the effects of the residential school system.

The mission of Minwaashin Lodge is to provide wholistic programs and services for grandmothers, women, children and youth impacted by family violence and residential schooling. All programs and services are provided in the context of cultural beliefs and values as part of the healing journey.

Here’s how you can participate.

Make a Donation and Get a Free Book

If you make a donation, I will send you a copy of The Christmas Beaver. Not in stores and only available by order from Ottawa Press and Publishing. And only until Christmas.

The Christmas Beaver is a children’s book. But for children of all ages who believe in the magic of Christmas.

I am making an upfront donation of $500.00 to Minwaashin Lodge. I know that this money will go to support First Nations, Inuit and Metis women and children to have a good meal and presents from Santa under the tree on Christmas morning. If you want to make a donation please visit http://www.minlodge.com

Canadian donors can receive a tax receipt for their contribution.

Just send me an email at mike54martin@yahoo.ca and I’ll put The Christmas Beaver in the mail to you in time for Christmas.

Christmas is coming early: New Sgt. Windflower Holiday Mystery is here

The new Sgt. Windflower Holiday Mystery is here

Christmas in Newfoundland — Memories and Mysteries Book 2: A Sgt. Windflower Holiday Mystery is now available on Amazon and will soon be available at bookstores everywhere. Book Launch announcement very soon. Stay tuned.

From the author of the Award-winning Sgt. Windflower Mysteries including Christmas in Newfoundland: Memories and Mysteries Book 1, comes another welcome addition to the Sgt. Windflower family of books.

Come sit by the fire of the woodstove in the kitchen and listen to stories of Christmas long ago in Grand Bank and Ramea and tales of great adventure and Christmas magic in St. John’s in the 1960s and onward. Have Christmas dinner with Sgt. Windflower and Sheila and their two little girls. Then wait and see if any special visitors show up to entertain them.

Sing along with the choir or have a drink with old friends to celebrate Tibb’s Eve. Follow along as Eddie Tizzard has a special mission in the middle of a snowstorm and Herb Stoodley becomes an unlikely Christmas hero.

Christmas in Newfoundland is always a time for good food, good friends, and good cheer. And there’s always another chair at the table.

What readers are saying about Christmas in Newfoundland: Memories and Mysteries:

For someone whose family hails from Newfoundland and have lived on The Rock for generations upon generations, this novel was so beautifully nostalgic that I found myself smiling throughout the entire time I was reading it. The work is wonderful, warm, and charming as we walk with the author down memory lane to simpler times in one of the most beautiful provinces in Canada. This is just one big warm hug that will bring back fond memories to every reader, regardless of where they hail from.”

“Christmas in Newfoundland can be read quickly or slowly but I highly recommend reading it and getting lost in the Christmas spirit. Mike Martin will have you reminiscing about some of your old family traditions and may even give you ideas of new things to try in your Christmas.”

Signed copies will be available soon at:

Christmas in July??? Well, August

Christmas may be still a ways off, but we’re happy to announce that Christmas in Newfoundland 2: Memories and Mysteries will be coming in October, 2022. This new collection will feature all new stories from growing up in St. John’s all the ay around the island of Newfoundland.

Christmas in Newfoundland 2: Memories and Mysteries continues the stories of the magic of Christmas past and present. There are memories of a wide-eyed child in St. John’s in the 1960’s with sledding and skating and road hockey every day of a very long winter. There are also acts of kindness by almost complete strangers and a chance to share some of the joys of music in this magical season.

There are plenty of stories of mystery and intrigue and suspense from Windflower and the gang and we get to see Christmas through the eyes of his two little girls, Amelia Louise and Stella. As well as some special memories from Eddie Tizzard and his family. Even one from Herb Stoodley, Windflower’s best friend, who finds himself an unlikely Christmas hero on one snowy Christmas.

Come back to Christmas in St. John’s, Grand Bank and a special trip to Ramea, a long, long time ago. When some people hung their Christmas tree from the ceilings in their kitchen and mummers were a regular tradition. You might even learn a little about a special Newfoundland Christmas event, Tibb’s Eve, which always was an occasion for another celebration of Christmas. If you haven’t got the spirt of Christmas yet, this book will help get you started.

Stay tuned for more information, contests, giveaways and more.

Christmas in Newfoundland — Memories and Mysteries: A Sgt. Windflower Book – Paperback

“Christmas in Newfoundland is a special time. In the depths of long winter nights memories are made and stories are told. Of Christmas by candlelight and horse and buggy rides to church. Of shopping on Water Street in St. John’s before malls and the Internet. In later years, Sgt. Windflower came to work and then to stay in the quiet town of Grand Bank by the Atlantic Ocean where the salt air froze in the wind and the Mounties were welcomed to warm themselves by every fire. Come and warm yourself by the fire and hear their stories. Some memories and some mysteries. Enjoy some holiday time with Sgt. Windflower and all the familiar characters that you’d come to know and love. Good food, good friends and always another chair at the table.”

Early Reviews for Christmas in Newfoundland: Memories and Mysteries

Christmas cover

The early reviews are in and they are great.  Here is a sampling:

Lovely, Lovely Read

Oh my – this really is the icing on the cake (or snowy Christmases in Newfoundland) for the Sgt. Windflower Mysteries.   If you’ve not read any, then start at the beginning, they’re really good reads. I adored reading this collection of stories depicting St Johns and Grand Bank over Christmas periods past and present. Mike Martin paints pictures and creates atmosphere so clearly with his writing and elicits some rather emotional responses to the love and kindnesses shown at this particular time of year through his wonderful characters and memories.  Goodness – when Winston saves Christmas – well, have tissues nearby.

Hazel M. Reviewer

United Kingdom

Highly Recommended

For those for whom this is the first exposure to the series, the Sgt. Winston Windflower mystery series shares tales about a Mountie who finds himself with a new family and a new life in tiny Grand Bank, Newfoundland. Many of the characters from the first volume remain and most assuredly the setting of the dramas remains a place we learn to know well, but Mike Martin has that uncanny ability to open a new story with enough mix of entertainment and magnetizing hints of the mystery to come to capture the attention and imagination. Like this section from A Grand Bank Christmas: “This is a long slow stroll through winter and Christmas past in the small Town of Grand Bank, Newfoundland, home of adventure and the famous Grand Bank schooner, and for a ten-year-old boy and a nine-year-old girl, a world of magic and wonder.”

Other reviewers said:

“A wonderful new way to look at Christmas”

“Some really good ‘comfort food’ stories”

“A collection to be cherished and shared with children and grandchildren”

“If you like the other Sgt. Windflower stories you will love this book”
